The curriculum is modeled after top fine arts programs in writing and features course offerings in fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, journalism, screenwriting, portfolio work, as well as skill-based courses in digital arts, publication, copy editing, and oral interpretation.  In addition, the department sponsors Élan, an international student literary magazine, Coffeehouse, a student-produced evening of original performance work based on student writing, and the Douglas Anderson Writers' Festival which is a biennial event featuring writers of national and international acclaim.
