Open Mics

The Creative Writing department holds several Open Mics throughout the year, where students from all departments are free to share their work.

Public Readings

Each year, all writing students share their most meaningful work in a public reading. Readings are held throughout the school year and feature the work of all grade levels. All public readings are free, open to the public, and held in the DuBow Theatre at DA or the DA Recital Hall. ALL Creative Writing students are required to attend every public reading.

Coffee House

Coffee House is an annual event featuring a collaboration of the arts areas at Douglas Anderson. A theme is selected by the upperclassmen in early fall. All students have the opportunity to audition their work in collaboration with another art form, such as writing and dance. All work must be 100% original, from the writing to the choreography, and incorporate the theme in its interpretation.Coffee House is held in the DA Gym and the adjacent outdoor amphitheater.

Extravaganza

DA’s annual Extravaganza promotes the best of what Douglas Anderson students have to offer. The Creative Writing Department writes and produces a completely original piece for Extravaganza each year, featuring writing selected from upperclassmen. Creative Writing students in all grade levels audition to perform. Students commit to a rigorous audition schedule throughout January and February to participate.

Writer's Fest & Guest Artist Series

The mission of the Douglas Anderson Writers’ Festival is to provide hands-on, craft oriented workshops with professional writers and scholars, furnishing an invaluable and affordable opportunity for the emerging young writers of our community. The overarching purpose of the project is to provide exposure to the diversity of writing in the literary professional world and also to provide students with time, space and encouragement to contemplate and practice the art of creative writing.

Community Events

The Creative Writing department participates in many events throughout the Jacksonville community, such as Jax Book Fest and Jax by Jax.
